Does Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) Cause Hyperpigmentation?

SLS is a strong surfactant that can irritate and disrupt the skin barrier, especially in leave-on or high-frequency wash-off products. Barrier damage increases PIH risk.

Usage advice

SLS in rinse-off cleansers is acceptable for many people, but those with sensitive or pigmentation-prone skin may do better with gentler sulfate-free cleansers.

  • Choose sulfate-free cleansers if you notice dryness or stinging.
  • Rinse thoroughly and moisturize after cleansing.
  • Always use sun protection if your skin tends to hyperpigment; we recommend a zinc oxide sunscreen.
