Retinoids are valued for cell turnover and pigment correction, but they commonly cause irritation, dryness, and photosensitization — all of which can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation if introduced too quickly.

  • Photosensitization and barrier disruption
  • Paradoxical darkening if overused on sensitive skin

Usage advice

Retinoids are best introduced slowly, at night, with moisturizer and daily SPF. Wash-off retinol masks are lower risk than leave-on serums.

Recommendations

  • Start with low concentrations and apply only at night.
  • Use the 'sandwich' method: moisturizer, retinoid, moisturizer.
  • Always use sun protection if your skin tends to hyperpigment; we recommend a zinc oxide sunscreen.
