Does Glycolic Acid Cause Hyperpigmentation?

Glycolic acid is a small-molecule AHA that exfoliates effectively but can irritate and increase photosensitivity. Overuse or incorrect timing can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

  • Irritation leading to PIH, especially on darker skin tones

Usage advice

Glycolic acid is best used at night, at low frequency, and always followed by SPF the next day. Wash-off peels are lower risk than daily leave-on toners.

Recommendations

  • Introduce slowly (1-2 times per week).
  • Apply at night and use SPF every morning.
  • Avoid combining with retinoids on the same night when starting out.
  • Always use sun protection if your skin tends to hyperpigment; we recommend a zinc oxide sunscreen.
